The Nürburgring is always something very special. Home race. Family in the paddock. Friends at the track. But this weekend started anything but well: qualifying for the first race on Saturday was frankly a disaster. In such a competitive field, in which the first 20 drivers are only eight tenths apart, the slightest slip of the brakes is enough to put you at the back of the field. For Gian Luca, this meant 20th place on the grid, the worst quali of the entire season so far. But if there's one thing Gian Luca can do, it's fight back in the race.
From the end of the field to the top ten
Saturday lunchtime: traffic lights off, full concentration. What followed was pure racing. No waiting, no hesitation - just bold overtaking maneuvers, perfect timing and nerves of steel. Bit by bit, Gian Luca fought his way forward, passing drivers who are all at the same top level.
From 20th to 9th place - in a cup where every little mistake is immediately punished, this is not a matter of course. Even though a subsequent time penalty threw him back to 11th place in the standings, he still managed to finish the race: He was ninth on the track, and that's what counts.
Race 2 on Sunday
On Sunday, he started the second race from a better position in the points chase again. This time it was enough for 14th place - solid, but without the magic of the previous day. Nevertheless: two finishes, plenty of duels and valuable experience for the rest of the season.
The potential becomes visible
We always knew that Gian Luca had the potential to ride at the front of this tough field. Everyone could finally see it on Saturday. Not a lucky run - ability, fighting spirit and the first clear indication of where the journey can take him.
"From P20 to P9 - that almost feels like a victory. I know now that I can do it," said Gian Luca after the race - and that smile said more than any table.
